A Warning From Within the Ruling Party
The internal stability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has come under scrutiny following provocative claims by party chieftain Alwan Hassan. During an appearance on the television program Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Hassan asserted that a significant number of ministers and governors currently serving under the administration do not have President Bola Tinubu's best interests at heart. According to Hassan, these political actors are attracted to the President for the power he wields rather than out of personal loyalty or ideological alignment.
The Threat of Political Opportunism
Hassan expressed deep concern regarding what he views as a pattern of political opportunism among influential figures in the APC. He argued that the President is surrounded by individuals more interested in personal gain and political advantage than in the success of the current administration. This environment of transactional loyalty, Hassan suggests, creates a vacuum where genuine support should be, leaving the President vulnerable to shifts in the political wind as the next election cycle approaches.
Drawing Parallels to the 2015 Election
In a sobering comparison, Hassan likened the current atmosphere within the APC to the conditions that led to the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. He reminded viewers that Jonathan's downfall was facilitated not just by the strength of the opposition, but by the "sabotage" of those within his own circle who worked against him. "We used a lot of Jonathan’s people to win elections against him," Hassan remarked, suggesting that a similar blueprint for internal collapse is currently being drafted within the ruling party.
