A Philosophy of "Living Fully"

Heavy D passed away at age 44 from a pulmonary embolism, just as Lofaso's own career was reaching a tipping point. She recalled that Dwight was a man who lived with "unwavering joy" and zero hesitation. The irony, Lofaso explains, is that while he was the one encouraging her to slow down and enjoy the fruits of her labor, his early death became the catalyst that forced her to work harder to ensure their daughter’s future while simultaneously forcing her to "never waste a single moment."

Raising Xea Myers: Carrying the Legacy

Lofaso’s daughter, Xea, now in her early 20s, has been the focal point of Lofaso’s journey through grief. The chef noted that Xea possesses her father’s "gentle spirit" and "creative soul." In the interview, Lofaso shared that she often sees Dwight in the way Xea navigates the world, particularly in her appreciation for music and community. "He wasn't just a rapper; he was a light," Lofaso said. "I had to become both parents in an instant, and that meant teaching her the joy her father felt every day."

From Grief to Culinary Stardom

Lofaso admits that in the years following the loss, she "buried herself in her kitchens," opening successful Los Angeles venues like Dama and Scopa Italian Roots. She credited Heavy D for being her original "hype man," often telling her she would be the biggest chef in the world. "Ironic is the right word because he wanted me to relax, but his passing made me realize how short life is, which made me want to build something that would last forever," she explained.
