Exponential Revenue Growth Challenges Industry Projections
Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, has entered a period of explosive financial growth, reporting annualized revenue of more than 30 billion dollars as of April 2026. This figure represents a massive leap from the 19 billion dollars reported just one month ago and more than triples the company’s revenue from the end of last year. At this current trajectory, the firm is on track to surpass its mid-December projections of 32 billion dollars by the end of the year nearly eight months ahead of schedule. Analysts suggest the company is currently in the exponential phase of the "S-curve," though market saturation and infrastructure constraints are expected to eventually moderate this pace.
Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI Amid Accounting Variations
The latest figures suggest that Anthropic has likely overtaken its primary competitor, OpenAI, whose annualized revenue was reported at 25 billion dollars at the end of February. While defenders of OpenAI point to differences in revenue accounting through cloud partners, the gap remains significant. OpenAI reportedly counts only 20 percent of its model sales through Microsoft Azure as revenue due to exclusive intellectual property agreements. In contrast, Anthropic counts the total value of Claude sales made through Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google. Even if OpenAI utilized Anthropic’s accounting methods, sources indicate its revenue would only increase by the low billions, leaving Anthropic in the lead.
Infrastructure Demands and the Race for Compute Power
To sustain this unprecedented growth, Anthropic is aggressively securing massive amounts of server capacity. The company recently finalized a deal with Broadcom and Google for multiple gigawatts of capacity starting in 2027. Experts suggest that 3.5 gigawatts of power could support an additional 100 billion dollars in revenue. Anthropic’s long-term goal is to secure at least 10 gigawatts of capacity, a staggering figure considering that Amazon Web Services brought only 4 gigawatts online in all of last year. Without this expansion, the company faces the risk of spiked inference costs cutting into its margins.
