A Strategic Shift in Anambra Politics

In a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Hon. (Engr) Sir Okechukwu Chikwendu has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his country home in Otolo Nnewi. Chikwendu, who previously led the All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP) and chaired the Coalition for Good Governance, was welcomed by hundreds of supporters and party executives. He emphasized that his entrance into the ADC is fueled by a desire to challenge the current administration and prevent Nigeria from sliding into a "one-party state."

Backing Peter Obi’s Vision

The primary catalyst for Chikwendu’s defection is his commitment to the presidential ambition of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi. Speaking exclusively to Legit.ng, Chikwendu noted that the ADC provides the most viable platform for a "progressive" emergence of Obi as President of Nigeria. He argued that the Southeast must seize the 2027 opportunity, describing Obi as "the best thing that can happen to this country." Chikwendu also serves as a director in the Obidient Movement and vowed to mobilize local structures to ensure an ADC victory.

Wave of Defections Hits the Southeast

Chikwendu is not the only prominent figure migrating to the ADC. Rt. Hon. Prince Chukwudi Orizu, a former Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and ex-chairman of Nnewi North LGA, also recently dumped the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) for the ADC. Orizu cited a desire for "positive change" and echoed Chikwendu’s sentiment that an Igbo presidency is essential for national progress. Other notable entrants include Ambassador Alloy Ubah, who joined alongside Chikwendu to work toward the "political emancipation" of the Igbo people.
