A Call for Ethical Leadership in Nigerian Politics
The intersection of faith and public service took center stage in Ibadan as Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the necessity of ethical governance. During the 4th Annual Ramadan Lecture hosted by his Omituntun 3.0 platform, Ajadi asserted that the true essence of politics in Nigeria must transition from a pursuit of power to a fundamental principle of service. He argued that the current political climate requires a deliberate effort to educate both established and aspiring leaders on the moral obligations inherent in public office.
The Concept of Oselurere as a Governance Standard
The theme of this year’s lecture, "Oselurere" (Good Governance), was selected to challenge the mindset of politicians who seek office without comprehensive plans for national development. Ajadi explained that the choice was intentional, aiming to provide a religious and socio-political framework for the next generation of leaders. By framing good governance as a measurable standard of character and public service, the aspirant sought to redefine the rewards of political participation as the collective improvement of the masses rather than personal or partisan gain.
The Divine Trust of Political Authority
Guest lecturer Fadheelatus-Sheikh Al-Mufasir Usman Sannu Sheu, the Chief Tafseer of Ilorin Emirate, expanded on the spiritual dimensions of leadership. He maintained that Islam views political positions as "Amanah" (a trust) from God, for which every leader will eventually be held accountable. The scholar stressed that "Oselurere" extends far beyond campaign promises, requiring a deep commitment to justice, fairness, and the prioritization of the weak and vulnerable. He warned that any exercise of authority devoid of accountability is a violation of both religious and moral duty.
