A Decadel-Scale Commitment to Spanish Infrastructure
Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon.com, has dramatically increased its financial commitment to Spain. On May 22, 2024, the company announced a revised investment plan totaling 15.7 billion euros ($17 billion) over the next ten years. This represents a massive escalation from its original 2021 plan, which initially estimated an investment of 2.5 billion euros. The new capital will be directed toward expanding the company’s data centre presence in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain, solidifying the area’s position as a critical node in Amazon’s global infrastructure network.
Economic Impact and Job Creation in Aragon
The Spanish government has lauded the investment as a major victory for the national economy. According to AWS, the expansion is projected to support approximately 17,500 full-time equivalent jobs in local businesses annually through 2033. Furthermore, the company estimates that the project will contribute roughly 21.6 billion euros to Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Minister for Digital Transformation, José Luis Escrivá, highlighted that the move confirms Spain’s attractiveness as a stable and tech-forward destination for multinational corporations looking to scale their digital footprint in Europe.
Aragon as a European Cloud Powerhouse
The choice of Aragon as the primary site for this expansion is strategic, driven by the region’s availability of land, access to renewable energy sources, and strong local government support. AWS already operates three data centre zones in the region, located in Huesca, El Burgo de Ebro, and Villanueva de Gállego. The additional funding will allow for the construction of more server farms and the procurement of advanced hardware necessary to power high-capacity cloud computing and data storage. This infrastructure is increasingly vital for European enterprises and government agencies that require localized data residency to comply with strict EU privacy regulations.
