A Volatile Reference to Regional Political Violence

The All Progressives Congress has formally denounced Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for comments made during a national summit of opposition leaders in Ibadan. During the event, Makinde invoked the historical "Operation Wetie" period, a era defined by severe political bloodletting and lawlessness in Nigeria’s western region during the mid 1960s. The ruling party characterized the governor’s rhetoric as a dangerous escalation of political tension that directly threatens the peace and stability of the state he is sworn to protect.

Warning Against Consolidation of Legislative Power

The controversy began when Makinde addressed attendees at the All Opposition Political Party Leaders summit, voicing concerns over the current political landscape. According to the governor, there is a dangerous trend toward the consolidation of legislative power under a single party, which he suggested could lead to a repeat of historical unrest. By reminding the audience that the "Wild Wild West" era began in Ibadan, Makinde appeared to warn his political rivals that perceived overreach could trigger a violent civilian response similar to the events of sixty years ago.

The Ruling Party’s Response to Incitement

Reacting to the speech, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, released a statement on Sunday describing the remarks as deeply troubling. The party argued that as the Chief Security Officer of Oyo State, Makinde has a moral and legal obligation to prevent violence rather than reach for historical precedents associated with murderous rage. According to Morka, the governor’s choice of words demonstrated a lack of fitness for high office, as it risked inciting supporters to engage in widespread lawlessness and anarchy.
