The Shift in Celebrity Dynamics
Popular Afrobeats artist Zlatan Ibile has voiced significant concerns regarding the evolving structure of the Nigerian entertainment industry. During a recent appearance on the Afrobeats podcast hosted by Shopsydoo on April 23, 2026, Zlatan observed that the "celebrity" label is no longer exclusive to professional musicians. He noted that TikTok creators, pranksters, and social media influencers have now achieved a level of fame that allows them to successfully cross over into music, often overshadowing trained artists in the digital space.
Viral Success vs. Artistic Quality
According to Zlatan, the democratization of fame through influencer culture has a direct impact on the caliber of music being produced. He explained that when a skit maker or content creator drops a song, it can "blow up" simply due to their existing follower base rather than the technical or artistic merits of the track. This trend, he suggests, has created a market where viral potential is prioritized over enduring music quality. "It used to be that artists were the celebrities," Zlatan remarked, "but now TikTokers and influencers share that space."
Echoing Industry Concerns
Zlatan’s observations align with recent comments made by fellow singer Kcee, who also criticized the role of social media in distorting organic music metrics. Kcee argued that while social media provides visibility, it has negatively affected the integrity of streaming charts and the natural growth of songs. Both artists seem to agree that while influencer culture offers new promotional avenues, the long-term disadvantages—specifically the potential decline in creative standards—may outweigh the immediate benefits of viral marketing.
