Allegations of Targeted Sabotage
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) issued a formal allegation on Saturday, claiming that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is actively working to frustrate a major opposition summit in Ibadan. Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, utilized social media to announce that the party had uncovered coordinated plans to interfere with the event. According to Abdullahi, these efforts are part of a broader pattern of obstruction aimed at stifling the activities of opposition parties as they attempt to organize and discuss the current political climate in Nigeria.
Pattern of Venue Denials
In his statement, Abdullahi highlighted a history of logistical obstacles that the opposition has faced when trying to convene. He specifically cited instances in Abuja where the party was allegedly denied the use of public and private venues for high, level meetings. "After denying us the use of venues in Abuja, they now will not leave us alone to hold our meetings," Abdullahi stated, suggesting that the pressure has now shifted from the federal capital to regional hubs like Ibadan. He characterized these actions as the behavior of a ruling class that is "terrified" of opposition unity, despite public claims of confidence from the APC leadership.
Resilience Amidst Political Tension
Despite the alleged threats of disruption, the ADC leadership has maintained that the Ibadan summit will proceed as scheduled. Abdullahi emphasized that the opposition remains undeterred and motivated by a commitment to the Nigerian people. This resolve follows a similar incident during a previous ADC convention in Abuja, where the party reported last, minute attempts by state actors to halt the proceedings. The recurring nature of these allegations suggests a deepening friction between the ruling party and the opposition coalition as the political cycle progresses.
