A Critical Gap in the Education System

Despite the Education and Training Act providing the legal framework for a dispute resolution organization, no New Zealand government has yet implemented one. Children’s Commissioner Dr. Claire Achmad highlighted a "clear gap" in the system, noting that while schools are expected to solve disputes internally, many cases reach a stalemate that leaves children out of the classroom for extended periods.

"It’s crucial that there’s timely, child-focused and practical holistic resolutions in these kinds of situations," Dr. Achmad said, noting that the Commission’s rights line frequently receives calls regarding these "common themes."
