Allegations of Social Media Bias and Misconduct

In a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, the ADC House of Representatives caucus, led by Afam Ogene, formally demanded the removal and prosecution of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan. The caucus cited digital forensic evidence allegedly linking the Chairman to an X (formerly Twitter) account that expressed support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Furthermore, the lawmakers accused Amupitan of posting inflammatory content regarding "Christian genocide" in Nigeria. While INEC has officially denied these claims, the caucus maintains that investigators have traced the account to a phone number registered in the Chairman’s name.

The David Mark Leadership Tussle

Central to the lawmakers' grievance is INEC’s handling of the ADC’s internal leadership crisis. The caucus revealed that the commission had initially issued an affidavit recognizing former Senate President David Mark as the legitimate leader of the party. However, INEC subsequently withdrew this recognition, alongside that of a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala. The ADC caucus argues that this reversal has created an artificial crisis designed to prevent the party from successfully fielding candidates in the 2027 general elections.

Accusations of Judicial Collusion

The caucus also raised the alarm over what they described as a "duplicitous" collaboration between certain elements within INEC and the judiciary. According to Afam Ogene, credible information suggests an attempt to influence the outcome of a critical court case scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The lawmakers contend that this alleged interference is part of a broader strategy to legitimize a "discredited faction" of the ADC, thereby undermining the party's inclusivity and democratic aspirations.
