The Precarious State of Print Distribution

The Abuja Newspapers Distributors Association has issued a formal appeal to the federal government to intervene in the rapidly declining newspaper vending sector. Emmanuel Eche’Ofun John, the association’s president, argued that despite the digital revolution, vendors remains an essential link in the information dissemination chain. He noted that without these individuals, high ranking officials and the general public would lose critical access to physical dailies, yet the profession is increasingly treated with institutional disdain and neglect.

Systemic Harassment by State Agents

A primary concern raised by the association involves the aggressive tactics employed by government agents against street vendors. John lamented a recurring situation where vendors are arbitrarily arrested and detained on trumped up charges while attempting to conduct legitimate business. He emphasized that vendors are hardworking citizens earning a decent living and called for an immediate review of enforcement policies that treat these media partners as criminals rather than essential service providers.

The Financial Strain of Institutional Debt

The vending industry is currently grappling with significant financial instability caused by long term debts owed by various government offices. The ANDA president pointed out that many state institutions fail to prioritize payments for newspaper supplies, a practice that directly hurts both the vendors and the media organizations producing the content. He urged government offices to settle outstanding balances promptly to ease the liquidity crisis currently stifling the trade.
