A Growing Town with Shrinking Services
Darfield, a town in the Selwyn District consistently New Zealand’s fastest-growing region is currently facing a healthcare "perfect storm." While the town is undergoing a massive residential development surge, including an 800-home subdivision fast-tracked by the government, its primary health infrastructure is buckling:
Darfield Hospital: The 10-bed facility has suspended new admissions since late last year. It currently houses only one patient despite having a staff of 24.
General Practice: The town’s sole medical centre is no longer enrolling new patients, leaving even long-term residents and their families forced to seek care in other districts like Waimakariri.
Planning Gap: Health NZ projections estimated the population would reach 6,000 in 30 years; local residents and council members estimate it will hit 10,000 in half that time.
